Over two days, our visitors were given a holistic look at game development. Each had access to our entire team and even got a chance to pitch their ideas to members of our senior leadership team!
To wrap up this year’s program, we spoke to Jenny Hurley, Ripstone’s Head of People, as well as a few of the young people who took part.

Why We Open Our Doors to Young Talent
The games industry has always been known for its rapid evolution and innovation. By providing young individuals with a glimpse behind the scenes, we aim to offer them first-hand up-to-date insights into the industry’s dynamics – but it’s also about inspiring them to see the industry as a genuine, attainable career option.
“By inviting young people into our studio we hope to provide an experience to remember that ignites the passion that we all feel ourselves working in the games industry. Knowledge, confidence, and contacts – these elements are crucial for any industry, but that can mean little if we fail to show them that this is a viable, creative and rewarding career path,” notes Jenny Hurley, Ripstone’s Head of People.

Additionally, fostering open communication between experienced professionals and aspiring game developers can lead to valuable mentorships and networking opportunities.
“Over the two days, we actively encouraged them to ask questions, and not hesitate to seek guidance. We also stressed the importance of building and maintaining connections online, on platforms such as LinkedIn and ArtStation.”
What Do Young People Get Out Of It?
During the two-day program, Ripstone’s Work Taster initiative provided participants with a comprehensive overview of game development and studio operations. Seasoned professionals and department heads were on hand to share their career experiences and explain their contributions to game development.
Jenny explains the focus on meeting participants’ expectations. “We tried to ensure these two days were tailored to their individual needs, giving them as much knowledge as possible of the specific fields they were interested in.”

On the second day, participants were divided into teams, each guided by a studio expert, and tasked with creating and presenting a game idea. This exercise was designed to stimulate not only their creativity but also build confidence and hone their presentation skills; skills that are key to many games industry job roles.
“The outcomes were genuinely impressive. What these young participants achieved in such a limited time was a testament to their potential” adds Jenny.
Rocco Williamson, one of the young people who took part, had this to say about his experience:
“I found it to be an incredible insight into the gaming industry. Jenny, Sharon, Leo and the rest of the team were all fantastic. It has given me motivation and the willingness to succeed and stand out from the rest. Leo’s personal story was amazing to hear, and I hope to achieve my goals and will always use him as inspiration. It was an amazing opportunity. I will always treasure it.”
Another aspiring game developer, Connor Knapper, added:
“This was great for me. I was worried about changing job fields but getting to meet the team and get some feedback has reassured me that, with time and effort, I can land a job in the industry. The timing was great, this happened shortly after the college course ended and was a huge boost to my confidence.”
Future Plans for Ripstone’s Work Taster Program
We strongly value the positive impact of these Work Taster days on both the participants and the studio. After gathering feedback, we hope to extend the program from a two-day format in the future.

“We’ve been hosting these sessions every August for two days, but considering the feedback from both the young participants and our team, we are contemplating expanding it. It’s a mutually beneficial experience,” Jenny concludes.
In a continuously evolving games industry, our commitment to nurturing future games professionals isn’t just a nicety, it’s a necessity. We genuinely hope these Work Taster days offer young individuals valuable insights and inspiration, fostering their aspirations in the world of games.
